Tips to Work Sustainably From Home

“We accelerate sustainability”

Continuing with the Core Values of TKH Airport Solutions, we have prepared some sustainable tips that are useful for work from home.

Minimize Energy Waste

To prevent unnecessary energy consumption, unplug devices when they’re not in use. For instance, if your laptop is fully charged, disconnect it from the power source. Similarly, if you’re not using the kettle or any other appliances, ensure they are unplugged. Even small actions like filling the kettle with just enough water for one cup of tea can lead to significant energy savings over time.

Utilize Existing Office Supplies

Before heading out to buy new office supplies, take inventory of what you already have at home. Often, you’ll find that you have plenty of pens, highlighters, sticky notes, planners, or folders tucked away in drawers. Using these items before buying new ones is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly.

Add Plants to Your Workspace

Integrating plants into your workspace can improve air quality and enhance your mood. If you’re looking to add some greenery, consider adopting a plant from a local plant shelter. In the Netherlands, for instance, there are plant shelters where you can adopt houseplants that need a new home. Websites like Mevrouw Montstera provide handy overviews of plant shelters. Alternatively, look for second-hand plants on platforms like Marktplaats, which offers a category for houseplants. This sustainable option helps reduce waste and gives plants a second life.

Opt for Phone Calls Over Video Calls

Whenever possible, choose phone calls instead of video calls. For instance, using Zoom without video can save up to 90% on data usage, which translates to lower CO2 emissions. Additionally, periodically clean your email inbox. Data storage in large data centers consumes a lot of energy, so reducing your stored data helps decrease energy consumption.

Turn Off Unnecessary Lights

It’s easy to overlook lights in rooms you’re not using, but about 14% of your home energy consumption goes towards lighting. Make it a habit to turn off lights when you leave a room.

Maximize Natural Light

Following the previous tip, instead of turning on artificial lights during the day, open your blinds to let in natural sunlight. Natural light not only helps save electricity but also provides a mood boost and enhances your productivity. Position your workspace near a window to maximize the benefits of natural light.

Choose Sustainable Internet Providers

Investigate whether your internet provider is committed to sustainability. In the Netherlands, KPN is recognized as a sustainable provider. Choosing providers that prioritize renewable energy and eco-friendly practices can significantly reduce the environmental impact of your internet usage. Similarly, opt for web hosting services that use green energy.

Adjust Your Thermostat or Use Fans

To save energy, adjust your thermostat and use fans or light layers instead of relying solely on air conditioning or heating. During hot days, a fan is a more energy-efficient way to stay cool compared to an air conditioner. On colder days, wear extra layers or use a blanket to stay warm.
