Travel safely — physically & digitally

Whether you’re heading to France, Mexico, Japan, holidays should be memorable for the right reasons. Being prepared is good for your own personal safety and the protection your devices and data.

Digital safety on the go

Being online is convenient, but it can also bring risks. Keep this in mind before you go online anywhere:

  • Avoid public Wi‑Fi when you can: Free airport/café/hotel networks are often unsecured and can be dangerous for your personal data. Remember to turn off Auto-Join in your WiFi settings.
  • Use mobile data instead: Consider getting a local data package or eSIM, or rely on your 4G/5G to avoid public WiFi.
  • Use a VPN: If you must connect to shared Wi‑Fi, a VPN can help keep you and your device safe by encrypting your connection.

Physical safety

Phones and laptops are easy targets in busy areas. Pickpockets are everywhere, and chances are you won’t even notice somethings gone before it’s too late!

  • Keep devices close and out of sight: Use an inside jacket pocket or a zipped bag worn in front.
  • Be extra aware in crowds: Stations, markets, festivals, and queues are common pickpocket locations.
  • Don’t leave devices unattended: Make sure you don’t leave your phone, wallet, or bag up for grabs, for example on a table.

Be prepared

Reading up on your destination can save you a lot of trouble when the time comes.

  • Look up local customs and common scams: Be aware of what is normal at home but may be rude or risky elsewhere.
  • Know which areas to avoid (especially at night). Stick to well-lit, well-traveled routes. Look up reviews or warnings beforehand, for example with government website or local police.
  • Plan the basics. Save key addresses, remember or write down local emergency numbers, and plan how you’ll get back to your accommodation.
