Innovation Challenge: Breakthrough Ideas for TKH Airport Solutions

Last week we did this fun activity where people across the company participated in a unique 24-hour challenge, Think Impossible! The assignment was simple yet ambitious: develop creative, out-of-the-box ideas for TKH airport solutions and present them within just one day. The goal was to push boundaries, to let your inner child come up with these crazy ideas!

The Creative Lineup – Our teams delivered an impressive array of innovative concepts. Among the standout ideas that didn’t take the top spot were:

Holographic Tree Growth Incentive Program by Team Guido: A gamified sustainability program where employees earn points for eco-friendly practices, contributing to the growth of a virtual holographic tree.

3D Laser Guidance Corridor System by Riwaj and Wolfgang: A gaming-inspired visual flight path indication system using lasers or holograms to guide aircraft during extreme weather conditions.

Integrated Spring-Loaded Flags (CEDD AGL ISLF) by Projects Team (Anton, Yaman, Coen): An ingenious emergency backup solution featuring reflective flags that automatically deploy when airfield ground lighting fails.

Aaannd the winner is 🏆

Adaptive LED-Linse (10×10) by Tim Ciesla:

The concept that captured first place represents a revolutionary approach to precision lighting technology. This advanced system features multiple LEDs mounted on an aluminium carrier, with each incorporating a 1mm² LED and TIR optic (collimator).

What makes this solution truly groundbreaking is its adaptability: each module is variable in x, y, and z axes, presumably electromagnetically modified with Hall sensors for precise travel control. Alternatively, piezo elements could serve as the positioning mechanism, offering minimal but extremely precise movement capabilities.

This innovative design enables dynamic control over focal points, the number of light spots, and even the shape of each spot. Taking the concept further, piezo elements positioned between the LED and platform could align the wavelength of each individual LED. Through superposition, the amplitudes add up constructively, resulting in directed, amplified radiation, achieving super radiation and interference maximums. This sophisticated approach fundamentally changes the intensity distribution in space, making extreme energy concentration possible.

This challenge demonstrated our team’s incredible capacity for innovation and technical creativity. The winning adaptive LED system showcases the kind of forward-thinking solutions that position TKH at the forefront of airport technology. As we move from concept to potential development, these ideas remind us that breakthrough innovations often come from daring to think differently and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in our field.
